Our favourite outdoor winter activities

Since the pandemic started we have been getting creative about living more outside.

The winter months are particularly long and chilly in Alberta so we have slowly and surely dreamt up all the best ways to be with our favourite people outside!

Here's a quick list of my fave things to do in the winter and all are budget friendly ideas. Let us know what else are must dos this winter!!

    1. Build a snow fort. This Christmas Grandma's house had epic snow drifts so it's top of mind. Our boys know how to enjoy winter. Christmas memories secured. Check it out here
    1. Have a backyard fire. We have a sweet spot in our yard with a fire pit, hay bails (although your camping chairs work great too) and old fence panelling we snapped up online to make a cozy spot. Perfect for s'mores (maple marshmallows from Superstore are a must), sparklers and for Christmas I got Evan mystical fire packets that change the color of the fire! Often we buy smokies and buns and have them on hand for hosting too.
    2. Go hiking in Kananaskis. If you haven't been an ice walk in Grotto Canyon is epic. Perfect for a day trip and kids can do it. Get crampons! That is a must. And pic a day where it's for sure icy. You can check the conditions online. It's stunning for photos, a great walk and who doesn't love the mountains.
    3. Skate at an Outdoor Skating Rink. We're totally spoiled and live in a lake community where we can go and have multiple outdoor neighbourhood rinks too. You can get second skates at most sporting good stores that offer second hand equipment. Or hit up a thrift store and get the skates sharpened.
  1. Soak in an outdoor pool or hot tub. We're grateful to have a hot tub in our yard and we use it! It's a great way to wind down at the end of the night and connect with our family. Make it a practice and our son Otto makes games from the hot tub like bringing a can out to throw snowballs at. Don't have a hot tub - many mountain towns like Banff in our area have outdoor hot springs or pools to explore and enjoy.

We have learned to love winter and how to win at it. What did we miss?! Send us your suggestions in the comments or in a DM.
